Vars, its villages, its history

  Sainte-Catherine
The commune's bread basket in the past, Sainte Catherine benefits from exceptional sunshine and typical Vars architecture.

The village of Sainte Catherine , the commune's bread basket in the past, is with no doubt, the village which has the most kept its mountain character.

One can find a lot of tracks of its mountain architecture: Almost all the farms, most of them being old farms, are built in the traditional way: ground floor made out of stones, upper floor out of wood, balcony to dry the clothes. A sundial has been preserved on the front of one of the houses. It reminds us that , in 1883, a fire destroyed all or some part of the village.

Sainte Catherine, which is also called La Fortune,
does not have a church, which must have been destroyed when the road was enlarged, but the village has kept its communal wash tub, its traditional larch wooden balconies, its "gruate" (pulleys to store ricks) and its communal oven. With an ideal orientation South, this village delights its inhabitants.
