Don't hesitate to wander through the narrow streets of Vars Sainte Catherine, Sainte Marie, Saint Marcellin or Les Claux:
The old dwellings, the fountains, the quietness of the church square, the beautiful chalets and the slopes of these villages will allow you to take a little out to sea and overlook the valley on either side of the Chagne.

1- Chemin des cassettes


Itinerary: Pedestrians/snowshoes
Length: 1040 m
Round trip duration: 1 hr 15 mins

Features: Damé*
Accessible to families, open and sunny. Viewpoint on the resort and its villages

Description: The departure is from the top of the Chabrières hybrid lift, accessible by buying a pedestrian pass from the ski lift ticket offices.
When you exit the lift, the trail starts on your left.
At the first intersection, follow the route towards the mountain restaurant le Chal'heureux.


2- Chemin du barjo

Itinerary: Pedestrians/snowshoes
Length: 780 m
Round trip duration: 1 hr
Features: Damé*
Accessible to families, to visit and sunny. Viewpoint on the resort and its villages
Description: The departure is from the top of the Chabrières hybrid lift, accessible by buying a pedestrian pass from the ski lift ticket offices. When you exit the lift, the trail starts on your left. At the first intersection, follow the route towards the mountain restaurant Le Barjo.

3- Refuge Napoléon(from Les Claux by Fontbonne)

Accessible to families, to visit and sunny.
Description: The departure is behind the Lauzet residence (non-hard packed part) or below the residences in the hamlet of Les Rennes. Take the Fontbonne chairlift to the departure station and then follow the signs to the Napoleon refuge.





4- Napoleon Refuge (from Fournet plateau)

Itinerary: Pedestrians/snowshoes
Length: 2500 m
Round trip duration: 2 hrs

Accessible to families, sunny. You will enjoy an easy access route that will take you to the Refuge Napoléon, a historic place on the road to the Col de Vars (Vars Pass) with a breath-taking view of the lake.

Description:
From the resort centre, take the road that goes up towards the Col de Vars (either on foot or by free shuttle bus) to the top of the resort at the place called “le Fournet”. At the foot of the toboggan run and the entertainment centre, take the path towards the Napoleon refuge.



5- Col de Vars (from the Refuge Napoléon)

Length: 3500 m

Accessible to families. Viewpoint at the Col de Vars over the snowy mountains of Ubaye.
Description: Take a deep breath of fresh air and follow the track along the road from the Napoleon refuge (accessible on foot, route 4 or by free shuttle bus) in the direction of the Col de Vars. You may be surprised to discover animal tracks in the snow.


6- Chemin de la Forêt

Route: Snowshoes only
Length: 900 m
Round trip duration: 1 hr 15 mins
Features: Non-hard packed forest trail
Description: The departure is from the top of the Chabrières hybrid lift, accessible by buying a pedestrian pass from the ski lift ticket offices. When you exit the lift, the trail starts on your left. At the first intersection, follow the route towards the mountain restaurant, Chal'heureux. Cross the blue Jas du Boeuf trail and before going under the bridge, go down to the right along the forest until you meet the ski trail “le chemin des cassettes”. After a few steps, the snowshoe trail starts again below this trail. You will arrive on the snow front near the Chabrières cable car.

7- Peynier (from the Napoleon Refuge)

Route: Pedestrians/snowshoes
Length: 3700 m - D+ 273 m

Panoramic view of the whole resort, sunny route, out of the forest. Orientation table and mountain restaurant Les Balcons de Peynier on arrival.

Description:
The departure is at the level of the Napoleon refuge in the direction of the Col de Vars (accessible by free shuttle bus). From the car park of the Napoleon residence behind the refuge, follow the “Peynier” path.

8- Le chemin du facteur

Route: Pedestrians/snowshoes
Length: 1470 m
Round trip duration: 2 hrs

Features: Non-hard packed.
Accessible to families. Sunny in the morning, to discover

Description: This small route allows you to reach the village of Sainte Marie calmly from Les Claux or vice versa. From the heart of the resort (Vars les Claux), follow the road to the footbridge at the entrance of the resort, then from the car park of La Mayt, follow the sign “chemin du facteur”.



9- Circuit of the 3 villages - Sainte-Marie, Saint-Marcellin and Sainte-Catherine by road

Route: Route pedestrians only
Length: 5600 m
Round trip duration: 2 hrs 30 mins
Features: Accessible to families. Discover the richness of the villages of Vars with the heritage guide, available at the Tourist Office.
Description: Route between Sainte-Catherine and Saint-Marcellin: at the entrance to the village of Sainte-Catherine (accessible by shuttle bus), go past the laundromat and then take the one-way road on the left at the intersection. When you reach the main road, turn left to reach Saint-Marcellin. Route between Saint-Marcellin and Sainte-Marie: at the exit of the village, take the small road on your right before the bus stop. Go along the Chagne river. Route between Sainte-Marie and Sainte-Catherine: at the exit of the village of Sainte-Marie, before the bridge, go up the road towards Sainte-Catherine.


10- Le Chemin de Champ Flaou

Route: Snowshoes
Length: 880 m
Round trip duration: 1 hr
Features: Non-hard packed. Accessible to families. Sunny, view over the village of Sainte-Marie.
Description: The departure is at the northern entrance of the village of Sainte-Marie. Take the path a few metres before the supermarket to reach the village of Sainte-Catherine.

12- The Alp Bas Circuit

Route: Pedestrians/snowshoes
Length: 2000 m
Round trip duration: 1 hr 30 mins
Features: Hard packed*. All nature lovers and contemplatives will appreciate this trail where the landscapes offer themselves up like real postcards.
Description: From the village of Sainte-Catherine (accessible by free shuttle bus), go to the heights of the village, below the sawmill and take the Coulette trail. At the intersection with another path, go straight on.

13- Le Circuit de la Pinée

Route: Pedestrians/snowshoes
Length: 6000 m
Round trip duration: 3 hrs 30 mins
Features: Accessible to families. You will discover spectacular landscapes through this walk located on the heights of Sainte-Catherine.
Description: From the village of Sainte-Catherine (accessible by free shuttle bus), go to the heights of the village, below the sawmill and take route 13 which will take you through the Pine woods until you reach path no. 12.



14-Vars > Risoul

Route: Pedestrians/snowshoes
Length: 5950 m
Round trip duration: 3 hrs

Features:
Hard packed*. Take a day trip with your family and link Vars to Risoul through the forest by crossing the shepherd's huts.

Description:
From the top of the Sainte-Marie chairlift, accessible by buying a pedestrian pass from the lift ticket office, start the route at the sled dog level. Follow straight ahead and cross the Grand Vallon ski slope (caution). Continue to the intersection with route no. 15. Continue towards Risoul.


15- Le Chemin du Forest

Route snowshoes only
Length: 3000 m
Round trip duration: 2 hrs
Features:Not hard packed on 3/4 of the course. A few tricky passages. Suitable for people trained in mountain walking.
Description:Take route no. 14 from the top of the Sainte-Marie chairlift to reach the departure of no. 15, located almost 2 km away. At the intersection, take the runway 15 in the direction of Sainte-Marie or Saint-Marcellin. Halfway, you have the option to finish the route on asphalt road to the Pont de Chagne where you can then head towards one or other of the villages.

*Depending on the weather conditions, the hiking times are given as an indication and for an average level. These times and trail grooming may vary depending on the amount of snow. Some routes are loops. Please note that to access routes 12 or 13, it is necessary to add 30 min to the indicated time.
