OT VARS

Spring in Vars

the mountains in complete tranquillity

As winter gradually fades away and nature reasserts itself, Vars reveals a whole new side to itself. The peaks are still snow-capped, the green of the larch trees reappears, and the footpaths are slowly being rediscovered.

Discover Vars

and its thousand colours

Between the last of the snow-covered landscapes and the first signs of summer, spring offers a special opportunity to discover Vars in a different light. Nature gradually comes to life, the mountain streams regain their vigour and the panoramic views take on new colours. A quieter time of year, this season invites you to slow down, take the time to observe and make the most of the great outdoors. Here are a few good reasons to succumb to the charms of Vars in spring.

1. Watch as nature comes to life

As the warmer weather arrives, the mountains are gradually regaining their full colour. The first flowers are appearing in the meadows, the larch trees are turning green, and the torrents, fed by the melting snow, offer a spectacular sight.

This quieter, less crowded time of year is ideal for spotting alpine wildlife. Marmots, chamois and mountain birds are gradually returning to their habitats and can sometimes be spotted more easily than during the peak season. Take the time to stop and look around… and don’t forget your binoculars!

2. Head back out onto the trails

As the snow melts, the urge to get back out onto the trails sets in. Spring marks the return of the first accessible hikes and is the ideal time to get back into shape before the big summer getaways.

For us, spring goes hand in hand with Val d’Escreins (or almost…). Nicknamed ‘Little Canada Varsinc’, this unspoilt valley reopens its doors and invites you to discover it – or rediscover it time and time again – because you never tire of it. A complete change of scenery is guaranteed, far from the hustle and bustle of it all.

Please note that at the start of the season, some areas are still covered in snow. Remember to check the conditions before setting off and make sure you’re well equipped.

3. Cycle up the Col de Vars

Before the summer crowds arrive, spring offers ideal conditions for cycling enthusiasts: perfect temperatures and quiet roads. With traffic still light and the contrasting landscapes of snow and greenery, the climb takes on a special quality.

Linking the Hautes-Alpes to the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, the Col de Vars is one of the iconic passes on the Route des Grandes Alpes, the legendary route linking Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean.

4. Enjoy Vars at your leisure

Spring is also an invitation to slow down. Far from the hustle and bustle of the peak tourist seasons, it’s the ideal time to take your time exploring the valley at your own pace.

Some accommodation providers, restaurants and service providers remain open during the off-season and welcome you in a more intimate atmosphere.
