Speed skiing world cups

A look back at the race

The resort of Vars once again vibrated to the rhythm of speed skiing, hosting two stages of the Speed Skiing World Cup from 27 January to 2 February 2025.

Kick-off

of the KL season

An International Rendezvous

27 to 02 February 2025

The Ski Speed World Cup brought together some forty Klists from all over the world. From France to Italy, Japan to New Zealand, the world’s speed skiing community came together for an event marked by intensity and sporting spirit. Dressed in ultra-mouldy red outfits, equipped with poles and helmets shaped to maximise their aerodynamics, with winged boots and skis over 2.40 metres long, they were ready to tame the legendary Chabrières piste.

The quest for the Crystal Globe

Each race of this 2025 season is decisive for the overall ranking. The KListes gave their all to accumulate precious points with a view to the Globe de Cristal. The ski rockets have once again proved that this sport is a real battle against gravity and the clock. Thanks to the meticulous work of the resort’s teams, the piste was prepared to perfection, allowing the athletes to take off in optimum conditions despite the capricious weather and to give their best.

Exploit

at the top

On the sidelines of the competition, Norwegian Andrea Pharo Ronde, a visually impaired para-athlete who is virtually blind, challenged the slope of the famous Chabrières piste. Still buzzing with adrenalin after her blistering descent at 168.77 kph, she could hardly believe the magnitude of her achievement: she had just beaten the world record in her category.

Her feat was also made possible by the presence of Liss-Ann Pettersen, world speed skiing champion in 2013, and her guide for almost 15 years. Their partnership is based on absolute trust, built up over the years. Indeed, “the connection must be total, the language perfectly understood” because without that, it would be impossible to reach such speeds.

This was her first time on the legendary Chabrières track, the fastest in the world. “I was very nervous, but it’s a unique experience”. Coming from an alpine skiing background, she hopes to return in March to push back her limits even further.

With these results, the race for the Crystal Globe is heating up, and while the Italians have a clear lead, the competition is still wide open and nothing is certain yet. Each skier is more determined than ever to win this prestigious Crystal Globe.

Stage 2

Girl Power in the spotlight

On Sunday 2 February 2025, during the second stage of the Ski World Cup, Italy’s Valentina Greggio defied all the odds by setting the fastest time of the competition, men and women combined. She clocked 202.144 km/h, beating even the men’s winner Simone Origone, who clocked 202.122 km/h. This result illustrates the impressive performance of the Italian, who continues to shine from season to season: a true ambassador of women’s ski racing.

Another victory for the Italians

The Italians confirmed their domination of this second stage of the ski racing World Cup, with Simone Origone and Valentina Greggio once again in the lead. The race for the Crystal Globe is far from over! See you in Spain and Andorra for the next stages, where the best KL racers will be trying to turn the tide.
