Vars will be hosting a major international freeride event with the Vars Southline Series on 17 and 18 January 2026. The first stage of a new regional circuit, this competition promises to be a real freeride show on the faces of the Eyssina, the emblematic mountain of Vars.

During preparations for the freeride competition, an avalanche triggered today despite reinforced safety measures (PIDA, mantle analysis).
The mountains remain unpredictable. Out of a sense of responsibility and because safety is our absolute priority, we have decided to cancel the event on Saturday 17 January.

A strategic first step into the heart of international freeriding
On 17 and 18 January 2026, Vars will host the Vars Southline Series, bringing together riders from all horizons for a three-star freeride competition. The first stage of the circuit, it will offer a high level of skiing and an impressive spectacle for the public.

Already the scene of events such as the Red Bull Linecatcher and the Freeride World Qualifier, the Eyssina will offer riders a spectacular setting. The format is based on a single run, with two separate starts leading to a single finish, in the heart of a natural couloir. Each freerider will have to come up with the cleanest, most technical and most fluid line possible, adapting to the terrain and snow conditions in a demanding exercise that puts the emphasis on reading the terrain and making decisions.

Ubaye Freeride 115The runs will be judged according to international freeride criteria, taking into account the line chosen, fluidity, control and style. The event is part of both an international qualifying circuit and the South Line Series, a new regional circuit bringing together several resorts in the Southern Alps. Riders accumulate points as they progress through the various stages, with the aim of making a name for themselves over the course of the season. By hosting this event, Vars is confirming its commitment to high-level freeride and its appeal to an international community, while offering the public an intense sporting spectacle in an exceptional natural setting.
The competition is scheduled for 17 January 2026 from 9am to 12.30pm.
In the event of adverse weather conditions, the competition will be postponed until 18 January.
The spectator zone is a specially-designed area where you can watch the competitions and enjoy the entertainment, refreshments and food in a friendly atmosphere.
The spectator zone is open to the public from 9am to 2pm.
The spectator zone is accessible from the Sibières chairlift. Please note that this chairlift is only accessible on skis.
