The course of the sky

A high-altitude challenge in the heart of the peaks

The weekend’s showpiece event, the Tour des Crêtes offered a compendium of the most spectacular things Vars has to offer on Saturday 26 July: aerial peaks, 360° views, sustained climbs and technical descents. A demanding, wild route, with high altitude trails and cliffside passages, which challenged the runners.

This very complete race highlighted endurance, effort management and the ability to navigate in the mountains on a course that was as long as it was technical.

Morgan False, the surprise from the tarmac

Winner in 5:07, Morgan False created a surprise for his first participation in the Vars Mountain Trail… But also for his very first trail at altitude. Originally from Montpellier and a marathon runner by training, he only started trail running in April. At the age of 29, he discovered a whole new world here and immediately fell in love: “The passage over the crests of Vars, it was incredible. I loved it.”

His recipe for holding your head up for more than 5 hours? A lot of training, mental strength but above all good nutrition management.

True winning souls

Among the women, Laurence Lacotte won in 6:53, after a race run with regularity on this demanding course. She was just ahead of Nathalie Dalle, who arrived three minutes later (6:56), and then Anaëlle Chanteau, who completed the grand tour in 7:04. Between the long climbs, aerial sections and technical descents, effort management was key to keeping up the distance.
