Passage of the Tour de France

Back in pictures

On Friday 19 July 2024, the Grande Boucle passed through Vars on the 19th stage of the Tour de France. Here’s a look back at a day marked by the world’s most popular event.

Sport and celebration

Long live the Tour de France

Vars had the pleasure of seeing some of the world’s best cyclists cross its territory on the occasion of one of the world’s most popular events: the Tour de France.

The village streets and roadsides were packed with fans of the sport, but not the only ones. And that’s where the Tour’s strength lies: an event capable of bringing people together and thrilling them, which has managed to become part of French culture for ever.

Parents, children, grandparents, friends: the Tour is a celebration, and Vars did the riders and their famous caravan proud.

Richard Carapaz takes the lead over the Col de Vars

Considered to be the Queen stage of this 2024 edition of the Tour de France, this 19th day ensured a great sporting spectacle from the 140 riders in contention.

The slopes of the Col de Vars, in particular the first part of the climb, were the scene of a selection in the peloton, with counter-attacks leading to the formation of a group of nine leading riders.

It was Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz who crossed the summit of the Col de Vars in the lead before switching to the Ubaye side, 3 minutes 30 seconds ahead of the peloton, and taking precious points in his quest for the polka-dot jersey of best climber.

This was the 36th passage of the Tour de France through Vars, a stage brilliantly won by Slovenian rider Tadej Pogacar, who wore the yellow jersey on this fine day of cycling.
