The Vars Tourist Office is fully committed to making its destination more sustainable and respectful of its environment. Situated in the heart of a natural area, Vars places the preservation of its landscapes at the heart of its priorities. By making visitors and residents aware of the importance of sorting waste, we are collectively helping to protect our mountain, for today and for future generations.

In Vars, sorting
is part of the holiday
Why sort?
For our children, for our region, for our environment… and also for our budget, sorting is everyone’s business.
Your sorting helps :
Avoiding waste
By sorting, waste becomes a resource.
Recycled plastic is used to make new bottles, clothes and everyday objects.
- Glass becomes bottles and jars over and over again.
- Metals (steel, aluminium) are transformed into industrial parts.
- Paper and cardboard are reused to produce new packaging.
= Sorting gives materials a second life.
Limiting pollution
Recycling reduces :
- greenhouse gas emissions
- air, water and soil pollution,
- the impact of transporting and extracting raw materials.
= Less pollution means a healthier environment for everyone.
Saving natural resources
Packaging is made from precious resources (oil, sand, wood, etc.).
Recycling helps to :
- limit the extraction of non-renewable resources,
- reuse existing materials,
- reduce the overall ecological footprint.
= Sorting means preserving our planet’s resources.
Sorting
in our villages
In the four villages of Vars, Saint-Marcellin, Sainte-Marie, Sainte-Catherine and Les Claux, everything has been put in place to make sorting easier.
You’ll easily find :
- glass containers
- bins for plastic and cardboard
- bins for household waste
Collective composting facilities are also available for bio-waste (peelings, food scraps, green waste).

The Tourist Office

SMITOMGA (Syndicat Mixte de Traitement des Ordures Ménagères du Guillestrois et de l’Argentiérois) is the organisation responsible for waste management in the area.
A number of practical measures have been put in place:
– improving collection points
– installation of container access systems
– development of source separation of bio-waste
– introduction of incentives (pricing, appropriate services)
– deployment of solutions such as mobile waste collection centres
These initiatives are helping to bring about a lasting change in practices towards zero waste.
